What you need to know
What are seedlings anyway?
Seedlings are young plants that you grow in potting compost as a pre-culture before they are planted in a bed or larger growing pots. This gives them a head start on growth and protects the seedlings from frost in the cold frame. In Germany, most cuttings can only be planted outside in May, as they don't get enough light before then and it is still far too cold for them. Nightshade plants such as tomatoes in particular do not ripen when sown directly.
Why do you grow seedlings?
Seedlings are ideal if you want to grow different types of vegetables in spring. Generally, you can calculate back from the desired planting date to find out when the seeds should germinate. Don't worry, the information on the best conditions can always be found on the seed packets. With the Berlin GreenBox, growing and propagating your vegetable plants is particularly straightforward. Even amateur gardeners without green fingers can't go wrong here!
Common problems with seedling growth
In Germany, it is too cold and dark before early summer to sow vegetable seeds directly in the ground. This is why most vegetable varieties need to be grown in pre-cultivation to give them a head start on growth. Growing vegetables on the windowsill is also ideal for small apartments in cities - so you can enjoy fresh, home-grown vegetables even without a garden. The GreenBox also saves you a lot of work: the seedlings can remain in the GreenBox until the roots have completely penetrated the PlantPlug and do not need to be pricked out, i.e. separated.

Choosing the right seeds for the indoor garden
Your indoor garden should be one thing above all else: you like it. Do you love eating tomatoes or seasoning with chillies? Or are you more of a salad fan and love cucumbers? Choose your seeds individually or select one of our sets and bring nature into your home. With the Berlin GreenBox, you can grow your own seedlings and enjoy the anticipation of fresh, organic vegetables. The time for pre-cultivation varies depending on the type of vegetable plant. However, you can generally start pre-germinating in spring, i.e. mid to late March.
Sowing the seeds and promoting germination
Unlike with seedlings from the DIY store, you have everything in your own hands from the start when sowing vegetables. You can be sure that the seedlings have no diseases or pests and at the end of the day you will be holding the fruits (or vegetables) of your own labor in your hands. With our GreenBox, you are guaranteed unbeatable results in no time at all, as quality is important to us in all areas.
The integrated plant lamp provides the seedlings with the optimum amount of light every day. Thanks to the water tank, they always get exactly the right amount of water and the app lets you know at any time what stage the seedlings are currently in. Whether bell pepper seedlings, chili seedlings, lettuce seedlings or tomato seedlings: with the GreenBox, you are guaranteed to grow your favorite vegetables with ease.
How to properly care for your seedlings in the GreenBox
With the PlantPlugs in the slots, you can start distributing the seeds over the substrate cones. Our seed packets tell you exactly how many seeds you should use per plug. Fill up the water tank and cover the PlantPlugs with the U-plates and germination caps. The temperature rises under the germination caps so that the seeds have the perfect conditions. At the same time, the U-plates prevent the formation of mold. After a few days, you should see the first small shoots . If these touch the sprouting cap, you can remove them. Our tip: The GreenBoxApp tells you when the time has come. Then you just have to make sure that there is always enough water in the tank.
The big moment: repotting the seedlings
By Repotting in larger pots or directly into the garden, you create more space for the plants to grow properly. At the same time, you free up the slots for your next GreenBox experience . But when is it time to repot the seedlings? It becomes really clear when the roots are growing long and healthy from the PlantPlug. Then you can take the whole plant, place it in a larger pot and fill it with peat-free soil fill it up. Make sure that the pot is not too big - this can damage the vegetables. Our PlantPots are ideal for repotting!
You and the GreenBox
Harvesting and using your seedlings
Even after repotting, your plants should be kept bright and warm if you don't have your own garden: They will do well on the balcony or windowsill. Now it won't be long before you can harvest and process your tomatoes, chilies, cucumbers, herbs, zucchinis or lettuce. Invite a few friends over or make your family a delicious mixed salad from home-grown vegetables and enjoy!
Our insider tip
If you let lettuce grow, you can keep it longer if you pick from the outside in. This is because as long as the lettuce heart is undamaged, new leaves will continue to grow. By the way: If you want your young plants to last a long time, you can propagate them by cuttings and let them take root.

Grow seedlings and share your success!
After around 2 to 4 weeks, your young vegetables will be ready to move to a larger home. Take a look at the PlantPlugs from below first - only when the substrate is well rooted is the plant ready for repotting.
In short: all plants are suitable for growing in the GreenBox! Whether herbs, salads, vegetables, houseplants or even flowers and ornamental plants: You can't go wrong with the smart greenhouse.
The best time to plant your home-grown seedlings in the garden is mid to late May. By then it is warm and sunny enough in Germany for the sensitive plants to survive.
If you have grown your plants on the windowsill as a pre-culture, you need to acclimatize them to the weather in the garden. This process is called "hardening off" - you put your seedlings outside a little longer each day until it's time to plant them. But don't forget to bring them back inside at night at the beginning!
To ensure that the seedlings can recover well from repotting, you should water them sufficiently and fertilize them at regular intervals. The rule of thumb for both is: not too often, but rather a lot at once. This will prevent root rot. Also make sure that the plants get enough light so that they continue to grow.
You will get the best results if you give your seedlings enough time to root through the PlantPlugs. Then, after repotting or planting out, it's just a case of watering, sun, warmth and harvest. Bon appétit!
