Grow your own mushrooms with your GreenBox
On the mushrooms, get set, go! Autumn is just around the corner and with it the mushroom season. What could be better than going into the forest in October and picking some delicious mushrooms? Growing them yourself, of course! With the GreenBox from BerlinGreen, you can bring the forest right into your home and watch your own mushroom culture grow. Let's go - the mushrooms are waiting!
Why grow mushrooms?
Why should I grow my own mushrooms when I can just buy them in the supermarket or go foraging in the forest? Quite simply, natural mushrooms from the wild are often contaminated with harmful substances and heavy metals. Of course, you can still eat them, but only in moderation. In some areas of Germany, there is even a recommendation not to eat mushrooms you have picked. Supermarket mushrooms do not have this problem - however, the particularly nutritious varieties are very expensive.
By growing your favorite varieties yourself, you can harvest mushrooms four to five times over with very little effort. Our GreenBox offers the ideal growing conditions for growing your own mushrooms!
Mushroom cultivation as a sustainable alternative to meat
Nutrients, proteins and vitamins make mushrooms the ideal meat substitute - not least because of their consistency. Vegan dishes are becoming increasingly popular and mushrooms simply taste unbeatably good. Mushrooms, oyster mushrooms, king oyster mushrooms and shiitake mushrooms are particularly suitable as a meat substitute. They are rich in protein and essential amino acids that the body needs. At the same time, they have a hearty taste and a firm consistency - making them the ideal dupe for meat.
Shiitake mushrooms are mainly known from Asian cuisine, but did you know that oyster mushrooms and button mushrooms taste just as good and are just as versatile?
The advantages of growing your own mushrooms
Whether as ready-made cultures, in a substrate with mushroom mycelium or from mushroom spores in the garden: growing mushrooms is an experience for everyone! With the right preparation, you can easily grow these delicacies yourself at home or on the balcony. This guarantees you always have fresh mushrooms that haven't had to travel long distances. Health benefits at a glance
Edible mushrooms are also known as superfoods due to their high nutrient content; a term that hits the nail on the head. Mushrooms are full of vegetable protein, fiber, which aids digestion, as well as vitamins, minerals and trace elements! In Southeast Asia, certain types of mushrooms are credited with healing properties - most mushrooms are rich in B vitamins, vitamin D, potassium and selenium. These are all important nutrients that the human body needs to function properly.
But they are not only good for digestion! One of the world's most effective antibiotics, penicillin, is obtained from mushrooms - other metabolic products of mushrooms help to regulate cholesterol levels.

The spoon-shaped seitling is not only healthy and nutritious, but also versatile. Whether served hot or cold, seitling is always delicious. With it as a side dish, you can give everyday dishes that special kick and delight vegans, vegetarians and meat eaters.
Golden Oyster Mushroom
All my tropical mushrooms are yellow, yellow, yellow! The Golden Oyster Mushrooms from Asia are almost too good to pick. However, the mushroom variety from the Far East is not only visually appealing: it is also a real fun-guy in terms of taste and rounds off any dish perfectly.

Other varieties
Oyster mushrooms not quite to your taste? No problem, there are of course other types of mushrooms that you can grow yourself. How about champignons or a round of porcini mushrooms, for example? There are no limits to your creativity, as long as you keep the mushroom threads moist and provide the right temperature and light conditions. Mushrooms, for example, can grow completely without direct light, such as in a cellar. So pay attention and get to work on the mushroom tissue!
Growing mushrooms with your GreenBox
Fungi generally grow in two phases. In the first, the mycelium phase, a fungal network (mycelium) forms which completely penetrates the substrate. It consists of thread-like cells that absorb nutrients from the substrate. In the second phase, the fruiting body phase, what we commonly know as "mushrooms" are formed. These fruiting bodies grow from the mycelium and consist of a cap, stalk, lamellae and pores.
Preparation of the GreenBox
The GreenBox from BerlinGreen is the perfect environment for mushroom growth. You can easily control the most important factors via our app and stay informed at all times. You can easily control and optimize temperature, humidity and light. You don't have to worry about the substrate either - we provide you with the right growing medium.
Our mushroom substrate
The substrate for optimum fungal growth is rich in nutrients that the fungal network can absorb. As a rule, straw, sawdust or wood are used for this purpose. Important before inoculation with the mushroom spawn: The substrate must be free of contamination. At BerlinGreen, we naturally ensure that you only receive high-quality, disinfected straw substrate and inoculate it before delivery. Then you can get started right away and start your mushroom culture: all you have to do is cut an X in the cover film, place the pallet in the empty water tank and spray it with a little water.
Care of the indoor garden
To ensure that you really enjoy your mushrooms and that your harvest is a success, it is important to provide your mushroom cultivation with optimal conditions. This means: there should be constant temperatures as well as humidity and light conditions. The GreenBox is ideal for this! With the BerlinGreen app, you can control the light conditions at any time and our beautiful spray bottle makes watering twice as much fun. You should spray the substrate about one to three times a day to keep it moist. When the first fruiting bodies appear, do not spray directly on the mushrooms, but rather around the body. Our app also keeps you up to date on the current growth stages and when it is time to harvest.
Harvesting home-grown mushrooms
You can harvest your own mushrooms for the first time after just 5 to 7 days. To do this, you can either carefully twist out the fruiting bodies or cut them out with a clean knife. If you do it right, you can use the substrate for at least two more cultivations.

With the GreenBox from BerlinGreen, growing mushrooms at home is convenient and unproblematic. Oyster mushrooms such as rose, lemon and spoon-shaped mushrooms, button mushrooms, shiitake mushrooms and king oyster mushrooms are particularly suitable. Our mushroom growing kits are a guarantee of B vitamins, nutrients and enjoyment.
As a rule, you will see the first fruiting bodies after just a few days (4 to 10). The duration can vary depending on the type of mushroom and is heavily dependent on the environmental conditions. Oyster mushrooms, for example, grow particularly quickly, while button mushrooms take around 3 to 4 weeks. Shiitake mushrooms even need 2 to 4 months until the first fruiting bodies are ready for harvesting.
No, growing mushrooms is not difficult. Especially with the GreenBox, you can keep a close eye on your mushrooms and be sure that they are growing in a good substrate. If you opt for other types of cultivation, you may have to put in some effort. If you want to grow mushrooms in a block of wood, for example, you will also have to wait up to a year for the harvest. In any case, you should make sure that you keep the temperature and humidity constant.
Mushrooms like it moist, which is why the choice of substrate is so important. The substrate should be able to retain moisture so that the mushroom webbing can penetrate it well. Once you have made sure that the substrate is clean, you can use a spray bottle to keep it evenly moist while growing the mushrooms. However, also make sure that the mushrooms are well aerated and that there is no waterlogging - this will damage the crops.
The mushroom harvest is the culmination of your efforts and should be done carefully. If you do everything right, you can harvest mushrooms several times from the same substrate. To harvest the fruiting bodies, you can either twist them out or cut the mushrooms out with a clean, sharp knife. Make sure you cut away enough so that the mushrooms don't rot.
Depending on which mushroom categories you grow and the conditions under which they grow, the time to harvest can vary. Under the right environmental conditions, for example, you can harvest and prepare our oyster mushrooms after just 1 to 2 weeks. Other mushroom varieties need a little longer. Factors such as temperature, humidity, light and substrate have a major influence on the duration.
