Grow mushrooms yourself with your GreenBox
On the mushrooms, ready, go! Autumn is just around the corner and with it the mushroom season. What could be better than going out into the woods in October and picking some delicious mushrooms? Growing them yourself, of course! With BerlinGreen's GreenBox, you can bring the forest right into your home and watch your own mushroom culture grow. Let's go - the mushrooms are waiting!
Why grow mushrooms?
Why should I grow my own mushrooms when I can just buy them in the supermarket or go pick them in the forest? Quite simply, natural mushrooms from the outdoors are often contaminated with pollutants and heavy metals. You can still eat them, of course, but only in moderation. In some areas of Germany, there is even the recommendation to rather not eat collected mushrooms. Supermarket mushrooms do not have this problem - however, especially the particularly nutrient-rich varieties are very expensive.
By growing your favorite varieties yourself, you can harvest mushrooms four to five times, all with very little effort. Our GreenBox offers the ideal growing conditions to grow mushrooms yourself!
Mushroom cultivation as a sustainable alternative to meat
Nutrients, proteins and vitamins make mushrooms the ideal meat substitute - not least because of their consistency. Vegan dishes are becoming increasingly popular and mushrooms taste simply unbeatable. Particularly suitable as a meat substitute are mushrooms, oyster mushrooms, herb mushrooms and shiitake mushrooms. They are rich in proteins and essential amino acids that the body needs. At the same time, they have a hearty taste and a firm consistency - so the ideal dupe for meat.
Shiitake mushrooms are mostly known from Asian cuisine, but did you know that oyster mushrooms and seitlings taste just as good and are just as versatile?
The advantages of growing your own mushrooms
Whether as ready-made cultures, in the substrate with mushroom mycelium or from the mushroom spores in the garden: growing mushrooms is an experience for everyone! With the right preparation, you can easily grow the delicacies yourself in the apartment or on the balcony. Health benefits at a glance
Edible mushrooms are also called superfoods because of their nutrient-richness; a term that hits it on the head. Mushrooms are packed with plant-based protein, fiber that aids digestion, and vitamins, minerals and trace elements! In Southeast Asia, certain types of mushrooms are credited with healing properties - most mushrooms are rich in B vitamins, vitamin D, potassium and selenium. These are all important nutrients that the human body needs to function.
But they are not only good for digestion! One of the most effective antibiotics in the world, penicillin, is derived from mushrooms - other metabolites of mushrooms help regulate cholesterol levels.

Other varieties
Oyster mushrooms are not quite to your taste? No problem, there are of course other types of mushrooms that you can grow yourself. How about mushrooms or a round of porcini mushrooms? There are no limits to your creativity, as long as you keep the mushroom threads nice and moist and provide the right temperatures and light conditions. Mushrooms, for example, grow completely without direct light, such as in the cellar. So pay attention and get to the mushroom tissue!
The mushroom cultivation with your GreenBox
Fungi generally grow in two phases. In the first, the mycelial phase, a fungal network (mycelium) forms that completely penetrates the substrate. It consists of thread-like cells that absorb nutrients from the substrate. In the second, fruiting body phase, what we commonly know as "mushrooms" form. These fruiting bodies grow from the mycelium and consist of cap, stalk, lamellae and pores.
Preparation of the GreenBox
The GreenBox from BerlinGreen is the perfect environment for mushroom growth. You can easily control the most important factors via our app and are always informed. You can easily control and optimize temperature, humidity and light. You also don't have to worry about the substrate - we provide you with the suitable culture medium.
Our mushroom substrate
The substrate for optimal fungal growth is rich in nutrients that can absorb the fungal network. As a rule, straw, sawdust or wood are used for this purpose. Important before inoculation with the fungal spawn: the substrate must be free of contamination. Of course, we at BerlinGreen make sure that you receive only high-quality, disinfected substrate made of straw and inoculate it before delivery. Then you can get started right away and start your mushroom culture: To do this, you just need to cut an X in the cover foil and place the pallet in the empty water tank and spray it with some water.
Indoor garden care
In order to really enjoy your mushrooms and make your harvest a success, it is important to provide optimal conditions for your mushroom cultivation. This means that constant temperatures, humidity and light conditions should prevail. The GreenBox is ideal for this! With the BerlinGreen app you can control the light conditions at any time and with our beautiful spray bottle watering is twice as fun. You should spray the substrate about one to three times a day to keep it moist. When the first fruiting bodies appear, do not spray directly on the mushrooms, but rather around the body. Our app also keeps you up to date on the current growth stages and when it's time to harvest.
Harvest of homegrown mushrooms
After 5 to 7 days you can harvest your own mushrooms for the first time. To do this, you can either carefully twist out the fruiting bodies or cut them out with a clean knife. If you do it right, you can use the substrate for at least two more cultivations.

With the GreenBox from BerlinGreen, growing mushrooms at home is convenient and unproblematic. Oyster mushrooms such as rose, lemon and spoon shaped mushrooms, champignons, shiitake mushrooms and herb mushrooms are particularly suitable. Our mushroom growing kits are a guarantee of B vitamins, nutrients and enjoyment.
Usually you will see the first fruiting bodies after a few days (4 to 10). The duration can vary depending on the type of mushroom and is strongly dependent on the environmental conditions. Oyster mushrooms, for example, grow particularly quickly, while mushrooms need about 3 to 4 weeks. Shiitake mushrooms even need 2 to 4 months until the first fruiting bodies are ripe for harvesting.
No, growing mushrooms is not difficult. Especially with the GreenBox, you can keep a close eye on your mushrooms and be sure they are growing in a good substrate. If you choose to grow in other ways, you might have to put in some effort. For example, if you want to grow mushrooms in a block of wood, you will also have to wait up to a year for the harvest. In any case, you should make sure that you keep the temperatures and humidity constant.
Mushrooms like it moist, so the choice of substrate is so important. The substrate should be able to retain moisture so that the mushroom network can penetrate it well. Once you've made sure the substrate is clean, you can use a spray bottle to keep it evenly moist while growing the mushrooms. However, also make sure that the mushrooms are well ventilated and that no waterlogging forms - this harms the cultures.
Mushroom harvesting is the culmination of your efforts and should be done carefully. If you do everything right, you can harvest mushrooms from the same substrate several times. To harvest the fruiting bodies, you can either twist them out or use a clean, sharp knife to cut the mushrooms out. Be sure to cut away enough so that the mushrooms do not rot.
Depending on which categories of mushrooms you grow and the conditions in which they grow, the time to harvest may vary. For example, under the right environmental conditions, you can harvest and prepare our oyster mushrooms in as little as 1 to 2 weeks. Other mushroom varieties take a little longer. Factors such as temperature, humidity, light and substrate have a great influence on the duration.
