What you need to know
What are microgreens?
If the first thing you think of when you hear "microgreens" is cress, you're already on the right track. The special thing about microgreens, or leafy greens, is their inimitable taste and their really small size. With the GreenBox, you can easily grow them yourself thanks to our prefabricated chocolate bar-shaped seed discs! The seeds grow into small sprouts within a few days. Although the sprouts can also be harvested and used, they are not as rich in vitamins and nutrients as microgreens. When the sprout has developed 2 to 3 small leaves and is several centimetres high, you have perfect microgreens ready for harvesting.
Popular microgreens varieties for your GreenBox
The food trend has of course long since arrived in Germany - and what could be easier than growing microgreens in your own home garden? BerlinGreen has the ideal solution for your windowsill and anywhere else in your home. Our GreenBox allows you to grow the best microgreens varieties yourself, from seed to harvest. Whether broccoli, radishes, mustard or rocket - with our special microgreens insert it will definitely work.
Tips and tricks for successful cultivation
For the microgreens to grow healthily and quickly, the conditions must be right. Your seeds must be neither too cold nor too dark: Otherwise it will take longer for them to germinate. At the same time, there is a risk that the seeds will start to go moldy. In the GreenBox, they are naturally provided with just the right amount of light and water so that you can concentrate fully on watching your seeds grow.
Storing and keeping our microgreens pads
We pack our high-quality seeds carefully and with sustainability in mind. That's why you can store our microgreens pads in a dry place for at least 12 months until you want to use them
Advantages of microgreens
Almost all types of vegetables and lettuce that you can eat raw are also suitable as microgreens. Caution: You should stay away from peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers and eggplants. The leaves of nightshade plants are slightly poisonous and therefore not suitable for consumption! Apart from that, you can try them out to your heart's content. Our GreenBox is the perfect helper, even if you don't have green fingers.
Nutritional content and health benefits
Plants need a lot of energy, which they consume during the growth phase. However, microgreens are harvested during the seedling stage - so the small seedlings still have most of their energy. The concentrated amount of vitamin C, vitamin B, minerals and other nutrients that are otherwise distributed throughout the adult plant are contained in the green leaves. By integrating microgreens into your diet, you support your immune system, your connective tissue, your nerves and your bones. However, you should not see leafy greens as a complete substitute for vegetables - they lack fiber and therefore do not keep you full in the long term.
Enrichment of courts
They don't just look spectacular, they taste spectacular too! From sweet and spicy to hot and peppery, microgreens really suit every taste and enhance your smoothies, salads and even desserts. And the eye eats too: The little sprouts are that little something extra and spice up your snack with lots of color and kick.
Space-saving cultivation with the Berlin GreenBox
Growing microgreens is also child's play thanks to our prefabricated chocolate bar-shaped seed discs. As they are not supposed to grow tall anyway, you can sow them close together and simply place them on your windowsill in daylight. Of course, it works even better with our Berlin GreenBox! Preparing your GreenBox
Setting up our GreenBox is uncomplicated and works in no time at all. Our box is supplied with a tray for the water that the seeds need. Once you have filled the tray with water, you can fill the inserts with the microgreens pads. If you want to prepare your seeds even better, you can take a look at our instructions for the GreenBox.
Sowing and germination
Microgreens are sown very densely, as they are harvested after just a few days and therefore cannot interfere with each other's growth. When growing your own, it can be a little more complicated to distribute the seeds close enough together - which is why we have already done this for you. The microgreens pads are supplied directly with encapsulated seeds so that they only need to be kept moist.
Lighting requirements
The great thing about microgreens: You can grow them all year round! Normally, they need at least enough daylight. But thanks to our GreenBox, you don't have to worry about that. You can control the integrated plant lamp via our GreenBox app. You can rely on the GreenBox all round and know that your plants are in the best hands.
Care and growth phases
While the seedlings take a few days to swell and germinate under conventional conditions, you can observe this in the GreenBox after just a few hours. After 5 to 12 days, depending on the plant species, you can harvest the first microgreens - as soon as they have passed the sprout stage and developed cotyledons.
Harvest your vitamin-rich microgreens
If you're not sure when it's time to harvest your leafy greens, just check the app. This will give you a detailed overview of the different growth phases - it will even let you know when you can process the first seedlings. When harvesting, make sure that you make the cut about a finger's width above the soil. This allows the plants to sprout a second time. You get the right amount of vitamins for a day with a single piece of the microgreens pads, so dosing is very easy.

Grow microgreens and share your success!
Microgreens are young seedlings that you can harvest just a few days after sowing. As soon as they have broken out of the seed coat, the sprouts grow until they have formed their first pair of cotyledons. At this point, you can harvest and eat them. They are currently considered a trendy food that is rich in minerals and vitamins. The sprouts are said to have good effects on the heart and circulation.
Growing microgreens is uncomplicated and possible all year round. It is even easier with our GreenBox: the seed pods are already encapsulated in ready-made cultivation pads and only need to be watered before the seeds start to germinate.
On average, it takes around 5 to 8 days before you can harvest your first microgreens from the GreenBox. Depending on the type of plant, it can also take up to 2 weeks.
As a rule, any vegetable that you can eat raw is also suitable as a leafy green. However, you should be careful with nightshade plants such as tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and potatoes, as only the ripe fruits are edible and the leaves alone are slightly poisonous.
The food trend is not called a true superfood for nothing: Microgreens are rich in nutrients, minerals, vitamins and antioxidants. They support your immune system, your nerves, even your eyes and your connective tissue! They are also ideal for vertical farming with the Berlin GreenBox - the green herbs take up very little space.
Our microgreen pads are stored in a dry place and can be kept for at least 12 months before they are used. Harvesting is just as easy as growing: You simply cut off the desired amount just above the root and the growing soil. Our tip: Don't harvest everything at once, otherwise the small plants will spoil.
The difference between microgreens and sprouts lies in their germination and when they are harvested. Unlike sprouts, microgreens are sown in soil or a special substrate and are cut off above the root for consumption after up to 2 weeks. Sprouts, on the other hand, are germinated in water so that you can use them after a few days together with the root and stem.
