BERLIN GREEN presents - Microgreens!

BERLIN GREEN presents - Microgreens!

Microgreens are small, young seedlings, which are grown from seed and can be harvested after around 5 - 8 days when they are only a few centimetres tall. These small plants can be eaten raw and are often referred to as superfoods as they offer a high nutrient density and health benefits.

As microgreens are basically seedlings, sprouts and young plants of various edible vegetables, they have a much higher concentration of nutrients and vitamins than full-grown plants. They therefore contain everything the plant needs to enable it to grow vigorously.

But what exactly are seedlings, sprouts and greens?

When seeds germinate and the burst seeds grow tender roots, we are talking about seedlings. When the small leaf embryos called cotyledons then unfold, the seedlings become shoots. Only when the actual green leaflets with the green pigment chlorophyll have formed – we can call a it a greenery. On this stage, we can commonly call it "microgreens" as well.

A further distinction is made when harvesting, as sprouts are harvested with the roots and microgreens only the green, above-ground part of the plant.

The advantages of microgreens are plenty.

They are rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other nutrients that are important for a healthy and balanced diet. They can also help to reduce the risk of certain diseases such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

Some may know microgreens in the form of cress on buttered bread. A delicious snack that still enjoys some popularity today. But microgreens are also excellent as a topping on sandwiches of any kind, on salads and even in pesto. They are a real all-rounders.

Most microgreens grow within a few days and are best harvested when they are between 5 - 12 days old.

If they exceed this age, the nutrient content decreases sharply, as the plants need them for their growth.

In addition, it is advised to eat or process them directly after harvesting.
