BERLIN GREEN presents - Microgreens!

BERLIN GREEN presents - Microgreens!

Microgreens are small, young seedlings, grown from seed and can be harvested after about 5 - 8 days, when they are only a few centimeters tall. These small plants can be eaten raw and are often called superfoods because of their high nutrient density and health benefits.

Since microgreens are basically seedlings, sprouts and young plants of various edible vegetables, they have a much higher concentration of nutrients and vitamins than adult plants. So they contain everything the plant needs to enable it to grow strongly.

But what exactly are sprouts, shoots and greens?

When seeds germinate and the burst seeds grow tender roots, we are talking about seedlings. When the small leaf embryos called cotyledons then unfold, the seedlings become shoots. Only when the actual green leaflets with the green pigment chlorophyll have formed – we can call a it a greenery. On this stage, we can commonly call it "microgreens" as well.

Another distinction occurs during harvesting, as sprouts are harvested with the roots, and in the case of microgreens, only the green, above-ground portion of the plant is harvested.

The advantages of microgreens are plenty.

They are rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other nutrients that are important for a healthy and balanced diet. In addition, they can help reduce the risk of certain diseases such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

Some may know microgreens in the form of cress on buttered bread. A delicious snack that still enjoys some popularity today. But microgreens are also excellent as a topping on sandwiches of any kind, on salads and even in pesto. They are a real all-rounders.

Most microgreens grow within a few days and are best harvested when they are between 5 - 12 days old.

If they exceed this age, the nutrient content decreases sharply, because the plants need them for growth.

In addition, it is advised to eat or process them directly after harvesting.

With the new insert tray for our GreenBox and our Microgreen pads, this is now easily possible at home.

The trays for the microgreens come in a modular design and can simply be placed on top of the PlantPlug inserts. This way, you can either grow microgreens exclusively or combine them with PlantPlugs.
