Warum dein Supermarkt-Basilikum immer eingeht (und was du dagegen tun kannst)

Why your supermarket basil always dies (and what you can do about it)

You know the drill: Tuesday evening grocery shopping, the basil in the plastic pot looks plump and green, by Saturday it's a brown heap. "I'm just not good with plants" – we've heard that often. The truth: It's not you, it's the pot.

The journey of a supermarket basil

Most potted basil in Germany comes from large Dutch greenhouses. There it is grown under ideal conditions and then sent on its journey while chilled – often for 7 to 10 days before it lands on the shelf. The plant has already gone through a marathon by the time you buy it, without you even seeing it.

Why there are dozens of plants in one pot

That is intentional. A full pot sells better than two delicate little plants. So they are sown densely, even though the plants stifle each other's roots. Visually great for a short time , biologically a ticking clock, it's over after 2–3 weeks at the latest.

How you can still save the pot

If you've already bought one: Don't throw it away!
Let the pot soak and carefully divide the plant bundles into 3–4 groups.
Place each bundle into a larger pot with fresh soil.
Place in a bright, but not overly sunny spot. Regularly harvest the shoot tips so that the plant becomes bushy.
With a bit of luck, you'll have joy for months instead of days.

The smarter way

If you use basil regularly, growing it yourself in the GreenBox is simply more worth it. No 650 km transport, no plastic pot, no food waste. Basil is in the GreenBox ready to harvest after a few weeks.

A packet of seeds costs under 2 euros or you can just take a PlantPlug Italian Herbs Set, that way you get two different varieties of basil, oregano and thyme together with the PlantPlugs.

From sowing to the herb garden in your apartment: your own short cycle in the GreenBox.
