Why your supermarket basil always dies (and what you can do about it)
You know the feeling: Tuesday evening shopping, the basil in the plastic pot looks plump and green, by Saturday it’s a brown heap. “I just can't do plants” – we’ve heard it many times. The truth: It's not you, it's the pot.
The journey of a supermarket basil
Most potted basil in Germany comes from large Dutch greenhouses. There, it is grown under ideal conditions and then sent on its journey chilled – often for 7 to 10 days before it hits the shelf. By the time you buy it, the plant has already completed a marathon without you even seeing it.
Why there are dozens of plants in one pot
This is intentional. A full pot sells better than two delicate little plants. So they are sown densely, even though the plants choke each other's roots. Visually great for a short time, biologically a ticking clock, at the latest after 2–3 weeks it's over.
How to save the pot anyway
The smarter way
If you use basil regularly, growing your own in the GreenBox is simply more worthwhile. No 650 km transport, no plastic pot, no food Waste. Basil is ready for harvest in the GreenBox after just a few weeks.
A seed packet costs less than 2 euros, or you can go straight for a PlantPlug Italian Herb Set, where you have two different types of basil, oregano and thyme together with the PlantPlugs.
