Tomatoes on the balcony? Why indoors is currently the better idea.
The same picture every year: in May, balconies are stocked with tomato plants, in July brown leaves hang over the railing and at some point the pot is quietly disposed of.
We don't want to spoil balcony gardening for anyone here. But we want to talk honestly about why indoor cultivation is often the better choice for tomatoes — especially now.
What heat does to tomatoes
Tomatoes like warmth. But from approx. 32 °C they drop their blossoms — meaning: no fruit. In recent years, we have regularly had weeks in Germany with 35 °C and more, even on north-facing balconies. In addition, there is radiation from concrete and house walls. You can quickly measure 40 °C on the balcony, even if the weather report says 33.
In the GreenBox it stays at room temperature. Your kitchen is at 22 °C? So are your tomatoes.
Pests — no issue indoors
Outdoors you have aphids, whiteflies, spider mites, tomato leaf miners. Some can be fought biologically, many simply ruin your season. In closed rooms, this is almost completely eliminated. No pests, no pesticides, no stress.
Which varieties work indoors?
Not all of them. Large beefsteak tomatoes need too much space and light. What works well:
-
Cherry Tomato — compact, bushy, needs no support. Perfect for the GreenBox.
-
Cocktailtomate Red Bubble — is perfectly suited for garnishing or enjoying on its own with its firm-fleshed texture and fruity sweet taste. Perfect for the GreenBox Plus.
-
Wildtomate Summer Sweet — with numerous yellow fruits and a very aromatic taste. Perfect for the GreenBox Plus.
Expect 10–12 weeks from sowing to the first ripe fruit. Sounds long, but you have to do almost nothing during that time — refill water occasionally, and that's it.
Indoors you save on soil, pots and can even use a dark corner. You only need PlantPlugs, seeds, water. Fertilizer is already integrated into the PlantPlugs, so one less thing to worry about. And you have season all year round, not just from July to September.
Our Cherry Tomato & Chili PlantPlug Mix is perfectly made for it.
